"Self portraiture has always been central to my work. During my studies at the University of
Southwestern Louisiana I investigated self portraiture through photography, performance and sculpture, as well as painting, which was my major. Upon graduating from USL I attended The School of the Art Institute of Chicago to pursue an MFA in photography. I received a 100% merit based scholarship for the two years that I was there between 1994-1996. In the summer of 1995 I was selected to participate in the show Face Forward: Self Portraiture in Contemporary Art at the John Micheal Kohler Arts Center. I was also a part of a group show Tarazona Foto 1995 in Tarazona, Spain. In 1996 I received the Weinstein Memorial Scholarship and an honorable mention for the SAIC 1996 MFA fellowships. After graduating I had the unique opportunity to travel for four months alone throughout Europe, Egypt and Kenya. "In May of 1997 I moved to Brooklyn, New York where I currently reside. In the spring of 1998 I was a participant of The Artist in the Marketplace Program. This program gave me the opportunity to meet and learn from other New York, emerging artists. I showed my video work for the first time in The Bronx Museum of the Arts. The piece entitled Blueberries, a video installation, was a part of the 18th Annual Artist in the Marketplace group show. "Since that time I have become increasingly involved in video. In 1999 I was a participant of the Rotunda Gallery/Brooklyn Community Access Television residency. "Currently, I am continuing to work on numerous video projects and performances. I will continue to investigate the theme of laughter as a coping mechanism for tragedy. Aside from video, I look forward to further developing my performance work and intend to combine video, photography and sculpture into the form of a darkly humorous installation." |
